- It is in the north east of Bulgaria, 120 kmts from Varna, 135 kmts from the airport, about 130 kmts from the sea. Situated on the northern foothills of the eastern Balkan Mountains on an area of 16 400 ha. Plain and hilly relief, with plateaus, in some areas mountainous relief predominates.
The territory of Targovishte region is characterised with variety and merging of a plain, undulating, and low mountain geographical formation, due to which the height above sea level varies from 150 to 690 meters. The natural gifts and the location of Targovishte municipality in combination with the historical heritage are premises for the progress and variety of the tourist activity. Archaeological data shows that there has been a certain human presence in this place even during the copper and stone epoch (halkolyt) - 5th to 4th millennium BC. Remains of antiquity of Thracian settlements (5th to 4th century BC), a settlement from the Roman epoch (3rd to 5th century AD) and a fortress from the Early Byzantine epoch (5th to 6th century) have been discovered in the surroundings of the town. A settlement from the First Bulgarian country, a settlement and a fortress from the Second Bulgarian country have been discovered.There are good conditions for hunting in the region - 300 hectares, where rare game can be found. Beautiful green forests massifs encircle all the historical places and tourist chalets. |
