Is a small port town on the northern end of the Black Sea Coast line the harbour has a broad outlet to the Black Sea which faces south and East. The coastline has cliffs, beaches and formations like caves, fissures, etc. The area does lack a river and irrigation is a valuable commodity. Just north of Kavarna is Cape Kaliakra, which is famous for the romantic legend about forty ‘maidens’ committing suicide there in the name of Christianity. It is also famous for caves, once the habitat of the extremely rare Black Sea monk seal’s.
Kavarna is one of the ancient towns on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast it used to be situated closer to the sea but after an earthquake in 1 BC the old town of Byzone became partly flooded by the sea. Later, in Roman times, it was rebuilt in a new location, 3 km inland. During the times of the First and Second Bulgarian Kingdom it was the administrative centre of Dobrudja.
The geographical location of Kavarna, together with the inheritance of the ancient seaport fortress of Byzone makes the resort a must to visit.
Kavarna is also famous for its ecological clean area with nature reserves and beautiful sea coast. It is a resort with perfect conditions for an enjoyable and relaxing summer vacation and for great hunting in the autumn and winter.
In recent years Kavarna has started to become a place where a lot of concerts are organized. In 2005 there were concerts by Nazareth, in June 05 the tourist season in the Municipality of Kavarna was officially opened with a big concert of the heavy metal bands Saxon, Ronnie James Dio, the famous vocalist of the legendary Rainbow and Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Scorpion also held concerts there. |
